Q&A with Courtnee
Place of Residence: Olive Branch, Mississippi
Year in School: 3rd Year
Major: Finance
When did you first start cheerleading or dancing? I randomly decided to try out for my middle school dance team because some of my friends were. (I was actually a volleyball player.) I was in 7th grade at the time I made the team and have been dancing ever since.
Why did you choose the school you currently attend? I chose the University of Memphis because I was offered both academic and dance scholarships. The campus is also about a 20 minute drive from my hometown so it made it easier to go home whenever I needed/wanted.
What is the biggest difference between cheer/dance in college versus high school/all-star? In high school I danced for an all star team and our main concern was competition with the occasional performance or parade we had to be in. My first year of Memphis Pom I quickly realized there was more to it than that. The dancers have to make appearances at University events, maintain a certain GPA, and dance at football, basketball, and volleyball games. It is also mandatory we attend a certain number of soccer and/or baseball games. So, overall, the biggest difference would be responsibilities.
Most memorable moment in collegiate cheer/dance career? My most memorable moment would be traveling with the Memphis Tigers Basketball team during the NCAA Tournament and making it all the way to the championship game in San Antonio.
Most embarrassing moment in college career? My most embarrassing moment would have to be last year when I filled in for our mascot at a basketball game because he could not make it. I had to put on the Pouncer suit that is hard to see or hear out of (especially when you’re not used to it) and try my best to act like I knew what I was doing. The game was going on and I was just walking around the court without a clue and got in trouble by the ref in front of everybody but just kept walking because I didn’t even hear him say something to me.
Most influential person in your life and why? The most influential person in my life has to be my father. I have always been a Daddy’s Girl and looked up to him. I look up to him even more as I get older because I notice how much of a hard worker he is and how he does everything he can to achieve his goals. The most admirable part about him is that he has achieved everything fairly and what I would consider the right way.
My career ambition is: I would really like to own my own business.
I live by the following motto: Keep on Keeping On….
Favorite course in school and why? Business Law. I enjoyed hearing about recent cases and how people were able to win even when I felt they were in the wrong.
Least favorite course and why? Any general Education Course. I felt that they were mostly common sense.
Favorite tv show: Family Guy!
Favorite hobbies: I enjoy scrapbooking, reading, dancing, and sports.
Favorite sports team growing up: Pittsburgh Steelers! They are still and will always be my favorite team!
Favorite vacation spot: New York! I enjoy how different it is from my hometown and how everything is fast-paced. There is always something to do there!
Favorite holiday and why? Can my birthday be a holiday? Haha. Christmas. I love being with family and not having to worry about school or work.
Best advice to give someone who wants to be a college cheerleader/dancer: Don’t give up. It seems like a lot at first, but it gets better. Just try to have a flexible schedule and it makes it easier.
No one knows this about me but… It really bothers me when people aren’t on time.
Is cheerleading/dancing a sport, why or why not? Dancing is a sport! You have to practice, have coordination, discipline, and endurance.
