Coed Division

 

In a division that is wide open this year, suddenly Elk Grove finds itself in a fight for its life to keep their streak alive. The four-time defending state champs easily won the Grayslake North Sectional, but the real challenge came from teams in other Sectionals.

 

At downstate Colfax Ridgeview, Rich Central posted the highest Sectional score at 92.83, better than two-plus points ahead of Elk Grove. Other Sectional winners were Downers Grove South, Lake Park, and Mascoutah, who all find themselves atop the leaderboard.

 

If there is a single team to keep an eye on, it's Lake Park. This year, Lake Park switched from Large Division to Coed, but their m.o. hasn't changed. They are still a hit-or-miss squad. They can look brilliant one moment, or very average the next. Earlier this season, they hit a 91.1 at the Lincoln-Way Central Invitational, so their Sectional score may or may not be misleading.

 

Downers Grove South has a new coach and a new attitude. Ryan Buado replaced one of the most respected coaches in the state, Gina Dryden, who retired after 25 years of coaching. DGS is looking to regain its notoriety after placing in the top three of the state finals from 2006-08, but missing out last year by .24 with a fourth place finish. The Mustangs easily won the Joliet Sectional.

 

Barrington, who took home the third-place trophy in last year's finals, also finds itself in contention after a close second-place finish to Lake Park in the Belvidere Sectional. Over the past three years, Barrington coach Laura Podolski and her assistants have quietly maneuvered the Broncos into one of the top cheer programs in the state. Last year's podium finish was no fluke. Despite less talent this year, Podolski always gets maximum effort and a clean routine from her squad.

 

No matter how you dissect this division, everything still points to Elk Grove, and rightly so since they have won all four state titles. Coach Jeff Siegal is a winner, and until someone can knock off Elk Grove, you can never look past them, although they are struggling this year. Methodically, EGV scored a 90.67 to win the Grayslake North Sectional, outdistancing runner-up Palatine by almost five and a half points.

 

Even though Elk Grove is right where they want to be, this division finds itself wide open. There is a strong mix of old blood (Elk Grove, Downers Grove South, Barrington, Palatine) and new (Rich Central, Homewood-Flossmoor, Lake Park, Mascoutah) that should make the state finals intriguing to watch.
